Design Principles

Victor Horta - Tassel House

Form

The space is quite narrow and rectangular in its basics, for exception of the arc ceiling. The table fallows the dimensions of the area and it's centered in the room, representing its shape.

Shape

The shape of the room could be described with both, natural and geometrical elements. Geometrical appears more in larger scale; the room itself, table, floor, wall finishings and columns. Doors have perfect square proportions, except for the slight curve on the very top, which adds natural feeling to it. Natural elements are more seen in details, like the frame above the door and window, the furniture piece on the right, candles on the table, lights and steel decorative features on the top and curve side on each column.

Color

The space has monochromatic color scheme. Main is light brown, given away mainly because of the wood, secondary is white and it represents the finishing on the walls. The combination gives a feeling of warmth and welcoming.

Texture

The wall finish, ceramic tiles give the space a very structural and dull appearance. But it also curves, fallows or wraps around the forms and features of the space. The floor finishes have a clearly set geometrical shapes.

Light

Light source is mainly natural, except for the artificial light feature above the table. Both, strongly represent Art Nouveau principles.

Proportion

There are proportion elements and the scale goes lower towards the window. Door to window frame; floor pattern underneath the table, as to the one in front of the window.

Scale

The scale of the door is much larger, compared to the other features in the interior.

Rhythm

Rhythm is created by the ceramic tile on the wall and wooden planks which separate different sections of it.

Emphasis

The decorative window and door opening frames seem to bring the emphasis of the space on to the natural light.
Symmetry
All of the features, both structural and decorative are mirrored in the room. It strikes the viewer, actually how well and in detail it is done, including the candles on the table or the metal decoration at the top of each column.
